On September 22nd, we broke ground at the KY Memorial for the
Unborn site. The rain took a break and we were greeted with abundant
sunshine as over 100 people gathered to welcome Rachel to her final resting
place in the center of this healing garden. After journeys around the state,
Rachel sat temporarily on her base and all in attendance were able to
visualize what this site will eventually look like.
Contractor Dennis O’Connell, had laid sod and provided platforms to
make the site accessible from the parking lot making it possible for everyone
to gather on the site despite all the recent rain. He also displayed the diagram
showing the site as it will look when completed.
The program began with Amazing Grace being played on the bagpipes
by Keith Goins. After welcoming the guests, Chairman Kathy Rutledge
introduced Rev. Wayne B. Smith, retired pastor of Southland Christian Church,
who led us in prayer and read scripture. Margie Montgomery, the Executive
Director of KY Right to Life spoke about the Sanctity of Life followed by a
beautiful song written and sang by Jessie Laine Powell. The guest speaker
was The Most Reverend Ronald W. Gainer, Bishop of the Diocese of
Lexington, who also blessed the site and the attendees. Following the closing
remarks by Kathy, the program participants and the committee members
planted the shovels signifying that the ground at the KY Memorial for the
Unborn site had at last been broken. As attendees left the site, they placed
the white roses they had been given in the arms of Rachel providing a
touching ending to a beautiful ceremony.
Vice Chairman Lorrie Parker along with committee members Diana
Maldonado and Kristen Story made the groundbreaking ceremony a
memorable event. The committee was very pleased with the turnout and
thanks be to God for holding back the rain!
